Gaza conflict delaying some arms deals between Greece, Israel: Report

ATHENS

The war in Gaza is slowing down some arms deals between Greece and Israel, Greek daily Kathimerini reported Saturday, citing officials.

Saying that defense cooperation with Israel remains strategically important for Athens, the daily added that the main potential delay involves a government-to-government deal for Israeli-made PULS multiple rocket launcher systems, which can fire Predator Hawk missiles up to 300 kilometers (190 miles).

While joint production of the system in Greece is planned, Greek officials are wary of appearing to co-produce offensive weapons amid the war in Gaza, it added.

According to the daily, acquisition of Israeli-made Spyder All in One, Barak MX, and David's Sling air defense systems to replace Russian-made systems, including S-300s, is also being affected.

However, it noted, other programs of high importance for the operational readiness of the armed forces such as upgrades to AH-64A Apache helicopters and deliveries of Spike missiles and Spice 1000/2000 smart bomb kits are progressing.

High-level talks between the two countries cover broader strategic issues, while Greek airports recently hosted Israeli state aircraft for confidential operations, the daily said.

The Israeli army has intensified its offensive across Gaza City, where hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians have sought refuge after being forced from their homes in northern and eastern Gaza.

The Israeli genocidal war in Gaza marked its 700th day on Friday, with Israel having killed over 64,000 Palestinians. The military campaign has devastated the enclave, which is facing famine.

Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
