Egypt voices ‘deep concern’ over Aleppo events, calls for safeguarding Syria’s security, unity
4 killed, 9 injured in SDF attack in northern Aleppo on Monday
CAIRO/ ISTANBUL
Egypt said Tuesday it is following with “deep concern” the ongoing developments in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo, calling for safeguarding the Arab country’s security and unity.
Four people were killed and nine injured on Monday in an attack carried out by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in northern Aleppo, according to local authorities. The Syrian Defense Ministry said several SDF members were neutralized after the attack.
In a statement, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry called for de-escalation, halting all manifestations of violence, protecting civilians, and preserving Syria’s security and territorial integrity.
“A sustainable solution to the Syrian crisis remains contingent on a comprehensive political process based on dialogue, which takes into account the interests of all components of the Syrian people, within the framework of the national state and its institutions,” the ministry said.
The SDF is dominated by the terrorist group YPG, the Syrian branch of the terrorist PKK.
On March 10, the Syrian presidency announced the signing of an agreement for the SDF’s integration into state institutions, reaffirming the country's territorial unity and rejecting any attempts at division.
Syrian authorities say that in the months since, the SDF has not shown any efforts to meet the terms of the agreement.
The Syrian government has been intensifying security efforts since the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime last December, after 24 years in power.
