Egypt on Wednesday called on Israel to provide a formal explanation after its forces fired warning shots at diplomats visiting the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank. The delegation also included Egypt’s ambassador to Ramallah.

“Egypt strongly condemns the incident that took place during a visit by several heads of diplomatic missions from various countries to the city of Jenin, including the Egyptian ambassador,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The visit was organized by the Palestinian Foreign Ministry. According to Egypt’s statement, Israeli forces fired live bullets while the diplomatic delegation was present at the scene.

The ministry said the incident violated all diplomatic norms and principles, calling on Israel to “provide the necessary clarifications regarding the circumstances of the incident.”

Following the incident, Portugal, France, and Italy summoned Israeli ambassadors in protest, vowing to take appropriate diplomatic measures.

The Israeli army confirmed its forces fired warning shots at the delegation, claiming it had deviated from a pre-approved route in an active combat zone.
