An Israeli man was killed and five others were injured in an alleged stabbing attack in Haifa city in northern Israel on Monday, police said.

A police statement said the attack took place in a bus station in the city, adding that the attacker was shot dead by security forces.

Police said the attacker was an Arab Israeli citizen from the Druze community, living in the Shafar'am town in northern Israel.

It said the perpetrator returned to Israel a week ago after spending several months abroad.

Israel’s national ambulance service Magen David Adom said one person was killed and five others injured in the attack, including one in critical condition and two seriously.

The Palestinian resistance group Hamas hailed the attack as a “normal response to Israeli crimes against the Palestinians” in Gaza and the West Bank.

It called on Palestinians in the occupied territories “to escalate confrontations with the Israeli army with all possible means."

At least 64 Palestinians have been killed and thousands displaced in deadly Israeli raids in the northern West Bank since Jan. 21, according to Palestinian figures.

The raids came after nearly 48,400 Palestinians were killed and over 111,000 others injured by a brutal Israeli war on Gaza since October 2023. The assault was halted by a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement that took hold on Jan. 19.

In November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
