ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia 

The number of coronavirus cases in Africa has climbed to 195,875 on Tuesday, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention said on Tuesday.

The death toll has now stood at 5,334, while 85,068 patients have recovered, it said.

North Africa recorded 56,300 cases, Southern Africa 53,700 -- of which South Africa alone carried 50,900 -- West Africa 42,400, East 22,700 and Central Africa 20,700.

The death toll in North Africa is 2,300, Southern Africa 1,100, West Africa 836, East Africa 662, and Central Africa 437.

Egypt suffered the most fatalities with 1,300, Algeria 715, Morocco 208.

In West Africa, Nigeria confirmed 354 deaths, Mali 92, Niger 65, Burkina Faso 53, Sierra Leone and Senegal 49 each, Ghana 48, Ivory Coast 38, Liberia 30, Guinea 29 and Togo 13.

Sudan in East Africa suffered 372 deaths, Kenya 85, Somalia 84, Djibouti 31, Ethiopia 27, Tanzania 21 and South Sudan 19.

In Central Africa, Cameroon recorded 206 fatalities, DRC 88, Chad 70, Republic of the Congo 22, Gabon 21, Sao Tome and Principe, and Equatorial Guinea 12 each.
