US stock market closes with gains
VIX volatility index plummets 19.46% to 21.86
ANKARA
US stocks jumped Tuesday to close higher, recovering from last week's losses.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average soared 492 points, or 1.4%, to 35,719. The blue-chip index lost 0.9% last week, its fourth weekly decline in a row.
The S&P 500 rose 95 points, or 2.07%, to 4,686 after declining 1.2% last week, posting its second consecutive weekly loss.
The Nasdaq saw the largest daily increase, gaining 461 points, or 3%, to 15,686. The tech-heavy index plummeted 2.6% last week.
Despite climbing above the critical 30 level twice last week, the VIX volatility index, known as the fear index, plummeted 19.46% to 21.86.
The dollar index was down 0.1% to 96.31, while the yield on 10-year US Treasury notes gained 3.2% to 1.480%.
Precious metals were up slightly, with gold adding 0.3% to $1,784 an ounce and silver increasing 0.6% to $22.52.
Crude prices were up almost 3%, with Brent crude trading at $75.23 per barrel and US benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude at $71.83.
