WASHINGTON

US House of Representatives Republican leader Kevin McCarthy vowed on Thursday a Republican probe of the Jan. 6 committee investigating last year’s Capitol riot and demanded the panel maintain all evidence gathered.

“You have spent a year and a half and millions of taxpayers' dollars conducting this investigation. It is imperative that all information collected be preserved not just for institutional prerogatives but for transparency to the American people,” McCarthy wrote in a letter to Bennie Thompson, the chairman of the House committee investigating the riot.

“The official Congressional Records do not belong to you or any member, but to the American people, and they are owed all of the information you gathered - not merely the information that comports with your political agenda,” he added.

Thompson said Wednesday that the panel will soon release its final report on the investigation.

"We plan to make available transcripts and other materials," Thompson told reporters.
