LONDON

The UK government on Friday announced plans to organize charter flights for British nationals currently in Israel, once airspace conditions permit.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy confirmed the move on X, saying that the safety of British citizens remains the government’s “top priority.”

“Flights will be arranged based on demand, and I strongly encourage all citizens in the area to register so we can keep them informed as the situation develops,” Lammy said.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) urged British nationals in Israel to register their presence in order to receive timely updates and assistance. No specific timeline was provided for when the flights may operate, but the FCDO said arrangements would begin as soon as the airspace reopens.

The UK’s move follows similar action by the Irish government, which has advised its citizens in Israel and Iran to register their whereabouts through its Citizens’ Registration portal.

The Irish Foreign Ministry said the step would help embassies provide relevant updates and assistance if needed.

Hostilities began last Friday when Israel launched airstrikes on targets in Iran, including military and nuclear sites. Tehran responded with missile strikes targeting Israeli territory.

According to Iranian media, at least 639 people have been killed and more than 1,300 injured in Israel’s attacks on Iran. Israeli authorities say 25 people have been killed and hundreds wounded in Iranian strikes.
