WASHINGTON 

US President Donald Trump on Monday congratulated Thailand and Cambodia on a recently brokered ceasefire that ended five days of cross-border fighting between the Southeast Asian nations.

"Just spoke to the Acting Prime Minister of Thailand and Prime Minister of Cambodia. I am pleased to announce that, after the involvement of President Donald J. Trump, both Countries have reached a CEASEFIRE and PEACE. Congratulations to all!" Trump said on social media.

"By ending this War, we have saved thousands of lives. I have instructed my Trade Team to restart negotiations on Trade. I have now ended many Wars in just six months — I am proud to be the President of PEACE!" he added.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced the “immediate” and “unconditional” ceasefire, which is effective from midnight local time (1700GMT) on Monday, after hosting peace talks between Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai in Kuala Lumpur.

Thai and Cambodian military commanders will hold an official meeting early Tuesday. Officials from the US and China also attended Monday's meeting.

The Southeast Asian neighbors have a border dispute along Cambodia’s Preah Vihear province and Thailand's northeastern province of Ubon Ratchathani, with renewed tensions since May 28, when a Cambodian soldier was killed.

Thailand and Cambodia saw ties spiral down in recent weeks as tensions escalated to cross-border airstrikes and rocket fire since last Thursday, which have killed many people, including soldiers.​​​​​​​

Thousands of people have been displaced due to the clashes.
