Trump blasts UK, France over Iran war, tells fuel-strapped nations to 'TAKE' Strait of Hormuz oil
US president accuses allies of failing to help Washington in Iran offensive that has killed over 1,340, warns America 'won't be there' for them in future conflicts
WASHINGTON
US President Donald Trump on Tuesday took aim at Britain for refusing involvement in the joint US-Israeli offensive on Iran and accused France of being "VERY UNHELPFUL" for denying overflight to military supply aircraft headed to Israel.
In a post on his social media company Truth Social, Trump suggested that the UK and other countries that “can’t get jet fuel” due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz should procure their supply from the US, as well as “build up some delayed courage, go to the Strait, and just TAKE IT.”
Accusing these nations of not supporting the US during the war on Iran, he said: “You’ll have to start learning how to fight for yourself, the U.S.A. won’t be there to help you anymore.”
“Iran has been, essentially, decimated. The hard part is done. Go get your own oil,” he added.
In a separate post, Trump chided France for being “VERY UNHELPFUL” in the killing of Iran’s then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on Feb. 28, when Washington and Tel Aviv launched airstrikes on the country.
“The Country of France wouldn’t let planes headed to Israel, loaded up with military supplies, fly over French territory. … The U.S.A. will REMEMBER,” he said
Trump says US will be there for allies
Speaking to CBS News, Trump softened his stance somewhat, saying the US would still be there for allies but expressed frustration that other nations were not doing more.
"NATO is terrible, and they're all terrible," he said, adding there was no longer any "real threat" at the strait.
On the US military presence around the strait, Trump said Washington is "not quite yet," pulling its assets, but indicated that allied nations would eventually need to take over. "Countries have to come in and take care of it," he said.
Trump claimed that the military operation, now in its fifth week, was ahead of schedule, noting that the US was approximately two weeks ahead of the four- to six-week timeline originally projected.
He said "not much" more needed to happen before he declares victory, pointing to what he called total regime change as a major factor. "These are different people than anyone has ever heard of before, and frankly, they've been more reasonable," he said.
Asked whether removing Iran's enriched uranium stockpile was a condition for victory, Trump was noncommittal, saying the material was buried so deep that even Iran had been unable to access it before the war. "Even without a war they haven't been able to do it," he said.
Much of Iran's uranium stockpile, estimated at around 450 kilograms enriched to 60%, lies beneath nuclear sites already struck in a previous US operation in June. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has confirmed the material is "under the rubble" with no immediate plans to retrieve it.
More than 1,340 people have been killed to date in the US-Israeli strikes on Iran.
Tehran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, along with Jordan, Iraq and Gulf countries hosting US military assets, causing casualties and infrastructure damage, while disrupting global markets and aviation.
