Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez called on the international community Tuesday to ensure that any peace agreement in Ukraine is firmly anchored in respect for international law and the United Nations Charter.

Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on Ukraine, Sanchez stressed that solutions that legitimize violence or alter internationally recognized borders by force are unacceptable.

"Any peace agreement that may be reached must be firmly anchored in respect for international law and the Charter of the United Nations...If we renege on these principles, we will not only betray the trust of the peoples that we represent, but we will also be opening the door to new crises and conflicts in the future," he said.

Sanchez condemned Russia's ongoing attacks against Ukraine, highlighting that it constitutes a violation of international law and international norms.

"This aggression is especially alarming because it has been perpetrated by a permanent member in this very chamber of the Security Council, the body responsible supposedly for safeguarding global peace and stability," he added.

He called for unified action by the international community using political, diplomatic and humanitarian tools to end the war and lay the foundations for a sustainable solution while noting Ukraine's repeated willingness to pursue a ceasefire and negotiated settlement.

Sanchez also condemned recent alleged Russian violations of European airspace, describing them as "absolutely unacceptable," and urged Security Council members to act decisively.

A suspected Russian drone strike on Sept. 10 hit Polish territory, prompting NATO to deploy fighter jets.

Similar accusations were made by Romania and Estonia and were denied by Russia.
