Russian President Vladimir Putin warned Thursday that alternative communication methods on the front lines not controlled by Russia can be dangerous for military personnel.

Speaking at a meeting with Russian military women ahead of International Women's Day in Moscow, Putin discussed means of communication on the front line with female signal operator Irina Godunova.

"Do you agree with the opinion that the use of those communication systems which are not ours, are not under our control pose a danger to personnel? Are the special types of communication used by the Ministry of Defense working?" he said.

Upon learning that this method of communication is effective, Putin said: "Good. Then the use of those types of communication that are not controlled by us pose a danger to personnel."

Godunova acknowledged that Telegram was used at the front but described it as an "enemy means of communication."

"We need to develop something of our own, something improved," she said.

Putin also recalled the disconnection of Starlink for Russians, saying: "The opponent continues using it, while you were cut from technical capabilities that did not directly belong to us."

Russian authorities started slowing down the functioning of Telegram in December. In early February, they limited access to the app in Russia but lifted restrictions following complaints from the military.

Since 2019, Russia has banned access to several social media platforms and apps, including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and WhatsApp.
