Pakistan has conferred one of its highest civilian awards on the commander of US Central Command (CENTCOM) at a ceremony in the capital Islamabad, an official statement said.

President Asif Ali Zardari conferred the Nishan-e-Imtiaz or Order of Excellence on Gen. Michael E. Kurilla for his military service at a ceremony at the President House on Saturday. The honor is in recognition of his "exemplary service and pivotal role in advancing enduring military cooperation between Pakistan and the US," said a statement from the Pakistan army.

While considered a civilian award, the Order of Excellence can also be awarded to military officials.

"General Kurilla’s visionary leadership has been instrumental in fostering mutual understanding, enhancing defense collaboration, and deepening counterterrorism cooperation between the Pakistan Armed Forces and USCENTCOM," the statement said.

The conferment of this distinguished honor reflects Pakistan’s deep appreciation for Kurilla’s "unwavering support and affirms the growing depth of the bilateral military partnership."

During his visit, Kurilla met with senior Pakistani civil and military leadership, including President Zardari and army chief Gen. Asim Munir.

Discussions encompassed regional security, military-to-military engagement, and joint efforts to combat terrorism and emerging transnational threats.

"This high-level recognition underscores the enduring strategic relationship between Pakistan and the United States and reaffirms their shared commitment to regional peace, security, and long-term defense cooperation," the statement concluded.

Relations between Islamabad and Washington have strengthened in recent months following US President Donald Trump's active role in brokering a ceasefire between Pakistan and India after four days of hostilities in May.

Trump, in a rare diplomatic development, also hosted a lunch for Munir at the White House earlier this month.

CENTCOM covers the Middle East as well as Central and South Asia.
