LONDON

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has announced that Oxford Street will be pedestrianized “as quickly as possible,” following strong support for the plans from members of the public and local businesses.

The move is part of a wider regeneration strategy for one of the UK’s busiest shopping streets, which has seen a decline in recent years.

The mayor's office said there is "overwhelming public and business support" for the proposals, which aim to revitalize the area and position it as a global retail and leisure destination.

More than 6,600 individuals, businesses, and organizations took part in the formal consultation.

The plans include banning all traffic from a 0.7-mile section of Oxford Street, stretching west from Great Portland Street, and transforming the area to accommodate street cafes and outdoor events.

“Oxford Street has suffered over many years, so urgent action is needed to give our nation’s high street a new lease of life,” Khan said.

“It’s clear that the vast majority of Londoners and major businesses back our exciting plans, so I’m pleased to confirm that we will now be moving ahead as quickly as possible.”

The announcement comes as some major department stores begin to re-establish their presence on Oxford Street, following a period in which the area became known for an influx of sweet shops and souvenir outlets of “dubious repute.”

City Hall confirmed that detailed traffic proposals, including plans to reroute buses and restrict all vehicular access, will be released for consultation later this year.

Khan added: “We want to rejuvenate Oxford Street; establish it as a global leader for shopping, leisure and outdoor events with a world-class, accessible, pedestrianized avenue. This will help to attract more international visitors, and act as a magnet for new investment and job creation, driving growth and economic prosperity for decades to come.”
