NATO to discuss alleged Russian violation of Estonian airspace
Talks follow Friday's alleged incursion by 3 Russian jets into Estonian airspace
BRUSSELS
The North Atlantic Council will convene on Tuesday at the level of ambassadors to discuss recent alleged violations of Estonian airspace, a NATO official confirmed Anadolu.
The meeting comes after three suspected Russian MiG-31 fighter jets reportedly entered the airspace of the small Baltic nation of Estonia over the Gulf of Finland for 12 minutes on Friday without authorization.
Following the incident, Estonia summoned Russia’s chargé d’affaires in the capital Tallinn and formally requested NATO consultations under Article 4 of the alliance's founding treaty, which states: “The Parties will consult together whenever, in the opinion of any of them, the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the Parties is threatened.”
Moscow has denied the alleged incursions, as well as other similar incidents in NATO countries in recent weeks.
The NATO official said the allies will meet in person at the alliance’s headquarters in Brussels, adding that any public communications regarding the talks would be shared later.
