Morocco confirms 5th coronavirus case

RABAT, Morocco

The number of coronavirus cases in Morocco has risen to five, the country’s Health Ministry announced on Wednesday.

In a statement, the ministry said two more cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, have been confirmed in the country.

The new cases come a day after the North African country reported its first coronavirus fatality.

The victim was an 89-year-old woman “who was suffering from chronic diseases of the respiratory system and heart”, according to the ministry.

Morocco’s first coronavirus case was reported on March 2 and it was a citizen who returned from Italy.

The coronavirus was initially detected last December in Wuhan, China, but has since spread to more than 105 countries.

The global death toll from COVID-19 is almost 4,300, with more than 118,000 confirmed cases, according to the World Health Organization.
