Mexico will not renew ties with Ecuador as long as Daniel Noboa is president: Mexican president
Mexico remains firm following elections that saw Noboa reelected

MEXICO CITY
President Claudia Sheinbaum said Wednesday that Mexico will not renew relations with Ecuador following elections Sunday in that country which saw Daniel Noboa reelected for a second term.
Mexico severed ties with Ecuador last April after Ecuadorian authorities, under Noboa’s orders, raided the Mexican Embassy to arrest former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas Espinel, who had been granted asylum.
The raid resulted in Espinel’s arrest on alleged corruption charges and involved aggression against Mexican officials at the embassy. In response, then-President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador cut ties with Ecuador, declaring that relations would not resume unless Noboa reversed his actions and issued a public apology -- something he refused to do.
Sheinbaum said at a briefing Wednesday that the diplomatic freeze would continue following Noboa’s reelection.
“To begin with, we do not have relations with Ecuador, nor will we have any while Noboa holds the Office of the President because he was responsible for the invasion of the Mexican Embassy -- an attack on our sovereignty,” said Sheinbaum.
Sheinbaum raised concerns about the election results, particularly citing a preliminary report by the Organization of American States (OAS), which claimed Noboa used public resources and state institutions to bolster his campaign. Noboa reportedly won with 56% of the vote.
The OAS said as the sitting president, Noboa should have taken an unpaid leave of absence during the campaign, which he failed to do.
And Luisa Gonzalez, who ran against Noboa on Sunday, accused Noboa and his administration of committing electoral fraud.
“Relations will not be resumed, and moreover, his victory was highly questionable -- even acknowledged as such by the OAS itself, not just by any other international body. The opposing candidate is also claiming there was fraud. So, from our side, relations with Ecuador will not be reestablished,” added Sheinbaum.
