As a second wave grips the country, Kenya reported over 560 new coronavirus infections and seven more deaths on Wednesday.

The death toll now stands at 1,552, according to the Health Ministry.

A total of 561 people – from a sample size of 6,387 – tested positive for COVID-19 over the past 24 hours, the ministry said.

The new cases have raised Kenya’s overall count to 89,661.

Recoveries in the country increased by 355 to reach 70,194, according to the latest data.

Kenya’s virus figures have continued to worsen despite restrictions enforced last month.

A nationwide night curfew from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. has been imposed at least until Jan. 3, along with limits on public gatherings and a two-month ban on political rallies.

Across the world, COVID-19 has claimed over 1.56 million lives since last December.

The number of infections is now over 68.41 million, while recoveries are above 44.11 million, according to latest figures from the US’ Johns Hopkins University.
