ISTANBUL
An Israeli Border Police trainee was killed Sunday in what local media reported as an accidental shooting involving a soldier in central Israel.
The incident occurred in the town of Azor, where the trainee was fatally shot during what was described by Haaretz newspaper as an unintended discharge of a firearm.
Haaretz reported that the shot was fired by a friend serving in the army.
Police earlier said two individuals connected to the incident were detained for questioning. One of the detainees is a soldier from the Givati Brigade, the paper said.
Israeli police and the Military Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
According to Israeli military data, 925 soldiers have been killed since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023, including 471 who died in ground fighting in the enclave.
