Iraq expressed on Tuesday its condemnation and rejection of any attack targeting diplomatic and consular missions in the country.

In a statement, the Foreign Ministry reiterated Baghdad’s commitment to providing diplomatic and consular missions "with full protection, in order to ensure the continuation of their work and the performance of their duties in a safe environment, in accordance with relevant international obligations."

The Iraqi authorities are "keen on monitoring any incidents affecting diplomatic missions” and will take the necessary legal measures against those involved to prevent "the recurrence of such attacks, and safeguard Iraq’s relations with brotherly and friendly countries," the ministry stressed.

On Monday, Iraq’s Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) said that a drone fell near the consulate of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Erbil.

Earlier, Iraqi media also reported explosions that coincided with sirens inside the compound housing the US Embassy in Baghdad.

Regional escalation flared up since Israel and the US launched a joint attack on Iran on Feb. 28, killing more than 1,200 people, and injuring over 10,000 others.

Tehran has retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries that are home to US military assets.
