ATHENS

Doctors and health care workers in Greece's public sector hospitals staged a protest walkout on Wednesday to press the government for pay raises and other issues such as hiring new doctors and making contractual ones permanent.

The Panhellenic Federation of Public Hospital Workers (POEDHN) said in a statement posted on its website that the organization's decision to protest, along with the Federation of Greek Hospital Doctors' Associations (OENGE), is supported by the Greek Civil Servants Trade Union, ADEDY.

Doctors and other health care workers want their salaries to be doubled and their bonuses paid on time and tax-free.

They also wanted an increase in the number of health care workers in public-sector hospitals.

Doctors and hospital workers have also announced a protest in front of the Health Ministry in Athens on Thursday.
