Finland extends law blocking asylum applications along Russian border
Officials to temporarily suspend applications, reject arrivals without appeal

ISTANBUL
Finland extended its deportation law on Wednesday that blocks asylum applications along the Russia border, according to the Helsinki Times.
The Finnish Parliament voted for the extension of the law allowing authorities to temporarily suspend asylum applications on the border and reject arrivals without giving them a right to appeal.
The law will remain in force until the end of 2026 after 168 voted for the extension.
It was originally approved in 2024 as a reaction to Moscow’s “instrumentalized” migration escalating on the eastern border, according to Finnish authorities.
The law faced criticism from several institutions when it was introduced, including the Council of Europe's Commissioner for Human Rights, Michael O'Flaherty, who said it "raises a number of significant human rights concerns" and urged lawmakers to reject it.
