DR Congo takes measures to stem 2nd virus wave
Steps include night curfew starting Friday, ban on gatherings of more than 10 people
YAOUNDE, Cameroon
New restrictions will be imposed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to curb a growing second wave of coronavirus infections, the country’s president announced late Wednesday.
A daily night curfew from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. will come into effect from Friday and will be in place until further notice, President Felix Tshisekedi said.
All people, except for health workers, will need special permission from provincial authorities to move about during the curfew period.
The new measures come as the caseload in DRC, a country of some 84 million, nears 15,000, including 12,850 recoveries and 364 deaths, according to the Health Ministry.
Gatherings of more than 10 people have also been prohibited, while holidays for schools will start from Friday, earlier than usual.
Authorities will also ramp up efforts to ensure compliance of virus safety rules, particularly wearing of masks, physical distancing, temperature monitoring, and sanitation measures.
COVID-19 tests have also been made compulsory for domestic and international travelers.
