Classified US Senate, House briefings on Iran-Israel war postponed: Report

WASHINGTON

Two classified closed-door briefings for lawmakers in the US House of Representatives and the Senate concerning the war between Israel and Iran were postponed until later in the week, according to a report published Tuesday.

The briefings were set to be conducted by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, CIA Director John Ratcliffe and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Dan Caine. But the Hill website reported that the Senate briefing will now take place Thursday to allow Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio to attend.

It is unclear when the House will receive the briefing.

Hegseth and Rubio are currently flying to the Hague where they will join President Donald Trump for a NATO leaders summit.

After 12 days of aerial combat between the two regional arch-foes, Trump announced overnight a ceasefire between Israel and Iran to end their conflict. But Israel and Iran continued to exchange fire with Tel Aviv launching heavy airstrikes on the Iranian capital after Trump's announcement.

“I didn’t like plenty of things I saw yesterday. I didn’t like the fact that Israel unloaded right after we made the deal. They didn’t have to unload. And I didn’t like the fact that … The (Iranian) retaliation was very strong. But in all fairness, Israel unloaded a lot,” Trump told reporters as he departed the White House for the Netherlands.

“And now I hear that Israel just went out because they felt (the deal) was violated by one rocket that didn’t land anywhere. That’s not what we want, I’ll tell you. And I’m telling you, I’m not happy about that, Israel, either," he added.

Trump originally said the ceasefire would involve a phased halt to operations, with Iran beginning the ceasefire first and Israel following 12 hours later. A full end to hostilities would then be declared at the 24th hour.

On Monday, Iran launched a barrage of missiles at the US military’s Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, marking a dramatic escalation in tensions following Washington targeting three Iranian nuclear sites on Sunday.

The US attacks were the latest escalation in a US-backed Israeli military assault on Iran since June 13, prompting Tehran to launch retaliatory attacks on Israel.
