Canada welcomes appointment of Mohammed Mustafa as Palestinian premier

TORONTO, Canada

The Canadian foreign minister extended congratulations Friday to Mohammed Mustafa following his appointment as Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority.

"Canada congratulates Muhammed Mustafa on his appointment as Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority and looks forward to working with him as he forms his new government," Melanie Joly wrote on X.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas appointed Mustafa on Thursday and asked him to form a new government.

Mustafa will replace Mohammad Shtayyeh who resigned in February in light of the developments related to the Israeli war on Gaza.

Even though Mustafa is not a member of Abbas' Fatah movement, he is a member of the Palestine Liberation Organization's Executive Committee.
