Amnesty urges UK’s health service to cancel contract with controversial Palantir software

LONDON

Amnesty International on Thursday renewed its call for hospitals not to use Palantir Technologies software and urged NHS (National Health Service) England to cancel the contract entirely.

In a statement, Amnesty International said that during a recent briefing by Medact — an organization bringing together health workers in the UK — “grave human rights concerns and risks” were outlined regarding contracting Palantir to build NHS England’s Federated Data Platform (FDP).

Palantir Technologies, the surveillance company, has secured dozens of contracts across key UK public institutions and is currently working with both the Israeli and the British military.

Matt Mahmoudi, a researcher and adviser on artificial intelligence and human rights at Amnesty International, said the rights group supports the briefing published by Medact and partners, which it said exposes why Palantir is an “unsuitable partner” for NHS England.

“Palantir has a track record of flagrantly disregarding international law and standards, including through violations of the human rights of migrants in the United States and services to the Israeli military and intelligence services that are linked to Gaza and Israel’s ongoing genocide there,” he added.

Mahmoudi said Amnesty is calling on NHS England, the United Kingdom government and other public institutions to use their leverage over investments, including by responsibly divesting from Palantir and ceasing the purchase of equipment and services from the company.

“These measures must remain in place until the company can demonstrate that it is not contributing to Israel’s genocide, apartheid, unlawful occupation or other crimes under international law,” he said.
