WASHINGTON

Five soldiers were shot Wednesday in an active shooter incident at the Fort Stewart base in the US state of Georgia.

"All soldiers were treated on-site and moved to Winn Army Community Hospital for further treatment. There is no active threat to the community," the Fort Stewart Hunter Army Airfield (FSHAA) said on Facebook.

Senior Commander Army Brig. Gen. John Lubas said at a news conference that all five soldiers are in stable condition and are expected to recover.

"The alleged shooter is in custody," Lubas said, adding the suspect was identified as Quornelius Radford, 28, an automated logistics sergeant assigned to the second Brigade Combat Team.

"Sergeant Radford has not previously deployed to combat. Sergeant Radford has been interviewed by the Army Criminal Investigation Division and is currently in pretrial confinement awaiting a charging decision by the Office of the Special Trial Counsel," Lubas added.

All lockdown measures have been lifted, he said, adding there is currently no threat to the community.

"What we know is...the shooting occurred at the soldier's place of work. It did involve his coworkers. We're still not certain about the motivations," said Lubas, confirming that the suspect did not use a military weapon but a personal handgun.

US government monitoring situation

Earlier, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said President Donald Trump was briefed.

"The White House is monitoring the situation," she wrote on X.

Trump later said the Army Criminal Investigation Division is on site to ensure that the perpetrator of "this atrocity...will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law."

"The entire nation is praying for the victims and their families, and hopefully they'll fully recover...but we're not going to forget what happened," he said in the Oval Office.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has also been briefed, said chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell.

"We are monitoring the situation," he wrote on X.

Hegseth later took to X about the "cowardly shooting" and said the soldiers are all in stable condition.

"Our prayers are with them, their families, and the entire Fort Stewart community in the aftermath of this attack. We owe profound gratitude to the law enforcement heroes who charged into danger.

"Swift justice will be brought to the perpetrator and anyone else found to be involved," he said.

Army Secretary Dan Driscoll said the Army is praying for the five soldiers who were shot.

"The suspect is in custody and an investigation is ongoing. My team remains in close contact with Ft. Stewart and is ready to assist with anything they need," Driscoll wrote on X.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said his office remains "in close contact" with law enforcement on the ground.

"We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same," Kemp wrote on X.

Separately, FBI Atlanta's Savannah office said it is aware of the incident and is coordinating with the Army Criminal Investigation Division for any assistance that might be needed.

Fort Stewart trains and deploys active and reserve Army units and is home to the 3rd Infantry Division. It is located 64.3 kilometers (40 miles) southwest of Savannah.
