Joey Jordison, co-founder and original drummer of the American rock band Slipknot, has passed away, his family announced on Wednesday.

“We are heartbroken to share the news that Joey Jordison, prolific drummer, musician and artist passed away peacefully in his sleep,” the family said in a statement. “Joey’s death has left us with empty hearts and feelings of indescribable sorrow.”

The cause of the death was not specified.

Jordison was born in Des Moines, Iowa on April 26, 1975. He founded the band in 1995 along with Shawn Cruhan and Paul Gray, and their self-titled debut album came out in 1999.

He stayed with Slipknot until 2013 before leaving for what he described at the time as personal reasons.
