Germany probes child porn claims against former MP

BERLIN

German courts launched a probe Thursday into allegations that Social Democratic Party (SDP) leaders had known of claims that a high profile politician possessed child pornography.

On Tuesday, local media reported that German police raided the home of former member of parliament Sebastian Edathy and found child porn magazines.

Another media claim said Thursday that former interior minister Hans Peter Friedrich had informed party leaders of Edathy’s possessions last October, meaning the SDP knew of the issue for months.

On the same day, local media said a probe was launched to investigate the claim.

Sebastian Edathy served as chairman of the Bundestag Committee on Interior Affairs and was responsible for investigating the murders committed by the neo-Nazi National Socialist Underground (NSU) group.

Edathy resigned from his seat last Friday, citing health problems.
