ISTANBUL 

Anadolu Agency is here with a rundown of the latest developments on the coronavirus pandemic and other news in Turkiye and around the world. 

Coronavirus and other developments in Turkiye

Turkiye reported more than 77,400 coronavirus cases Wednesday, according to official data.

The Health Ministry registered 77,434 new infections, 188 deaths and 85,501 recoveries over the past day. Also, 416,536 virus tests were carried out in the last 24 hours.

To stem the spread of the virus, the country has also administered more than 141.25 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines since it launched an immunization drive in January 2021.

More than 57.37 million people have received their first jab, while over 52.31 million have received their second shot, the latest ministry data showed. Turkiye has also given third booster shots to 24.58 million people.

Turkiye's president reiterated Wednesday that he is ready to host the leaders of Russia and Ukraine to “pave the way for re-establishing peace” as tensions between the two countries show little sign of diminishing.

"Turkiye wants tensions between Russia and Ukraine to be resolved before they turn into a new crisis," Recep Tayyip Erdogan said during a televised interview.

Erdogan also announced Israeli President Isaac Herzog's likely visit to Turkiye in early February, adding it could pave the way for a “new era” in relations between the two countries.

Other developments worldwide

Ukrainians “deserve peace,” Pope Francis pleaded in special prayers Wednesday as the threat of war with Russia continued to loom over the former Soviet republic.

Russia said Wednesday that it received a written response from the US to its proposal about security guarantees.

The US response to Russian demands amid a crisis regarding Ukraine bucked a key request from the Kremlin, Secretary of State Antony Blinken acknowledged Wednesday.

Italy’s parliament held a third day of inconclusive voting on a new president as parties continued to spar over the appointment that was once seen as a shoe-in for Prime Minister Mario Draghi.

Burkina Faso’s defense minister was arrested Wednesday, days after the military took power in the West African country, according to media reports.

​​​​​​​At least one person was killed and two others wounded when a bomb blast hit a teashop in northeastern Somalia on Wednesday, local media reported.
