LUSAKA, Zambia

Zambia reported two deaths and 17 new cases of Cholera over the past 24 hours, authorities said Thursday, urging citizens to take precautions to prevent further spread.

According to the Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI), 14 of the new cases were recorded in Lusaka, the capital, while the remaining three were reported in Mpulungu district in northern Zambia along the shores of Lake Tanganyika.

“The two deaths were recorded in Lusaka’s Kanyama township,” said Doreen Shempela, director of public health policy, diplomacy and communications at ZNPHI, speaking to the state television broadcaster.

Shempela said health authorities continue working with partners to strengthen laboratory capacity, surveillance and treatment for the disease, which usually increases during the rainy season.
