The UN special envoy for Syria on Wednesday "strongly" condemned Israel’s escalating airstrikes on Syrian territory, including densely populated areas and official buildings in the heart of Damascus.

He warned that the attacks are putting civilian lives at risk and threatening regional stability.

Geir Pedersen "urges Israel to cease immediately all violations of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and refrain from unilateral measures that exacerbate conflict," the envoy’s office said in a statement.

Pedersen expressed alarm about “serious allegations of extrajudicial executions and arbitrary killings,” as well as reports of civilians, religious leaders, and detainees being subjected to degrading treatment.

The statement also denounced the desecration of corpses, sectarian incitement, and widespread looting.

“The Special Envoy unequivocally condemns all acts of violence against civilians,” said the statement, urging all actors to de-escalate, protect civilians and return to dialogue.

He noted efforts to establish a ceasefire in Suwayda and called for it to result in “genuine and lasting de-escalation on the ground that includes all sides and stakeholders.”

Reiterating the principles of UN Security Council Resolution 2254, which outlines a road in 2025 for a political solution in Syria, Pedersen stressed the need for a credible and inclusive political transition that respects Syria’s sovereignty and unity.

He warned all parties against actions that could further undermine peace efforts or deepen the conflict.

Israel launched airstrikes Wednesday on Damascus, targeting the Defense Ministry and areas near the presidential palace.

The strikes came as Israel resumed attacks in southern Syria's Suwayda province, warning it will continue unless Syrian forces withdraw.

The Syrian army had deployed troops to the area to restore order after clashes between armed Druze and Bedouin groups that killed at least 30 people.

The Israeli army claims the operations are to protect the Druze minority.
