LONDON

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday expressed his condolences in the wake of a deadly train accident in Pakistan.

Speaking with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan, Johnson offered “his condolences following the tragic loss of life in the train crash in Sindh,” a government statement said.

At least 40 people were killed and 60 others injured early Monday in a collision between two passenger trains in southern Pakistan, officials and local media reported.

The collision between the northbound and southbound trains occurred near the Ghotki district in the southern Sindh province, some 526 kilometers (326 miles) from the provincial capital Karachi. ​​​​​​​An investigation has been ordered into the accident.

British and Pakistani leaders also discussed the situation in Afghanistan and “agreed on the need to ensure a long-term future of peace and stability in the country,” according to the statement.

Johnson and Khan also discussed “the need to take action to cut carbon emissions and protect biodiversity ahead of the UK-hosted COP26 Summit” in November and “the shared fight against coronavirus and resolved to work together to defeat the pandemic in our countries and around the world.”
