Switzerland condemns Israeli attacks on UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon
Swiss Foreign Ministry says it 'reaffirms its full support for UNIFIL'
London
Switzerland has expressed “deep concern” over the killing of peacekeepers from the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in southern Lebanon.
UNIFIL said Monday that two more peacekeepers were killed and two others injured, including one critically, in a blast that targeted their vehicle in southern Lebanon.
In a statement, the Swiss Foreign Ministry said it “reaffirms its full support for UNIFIL” following the incident.
It also referenced UN Security Council Resolution 2730, which calls for the protection of humanitarian and United Nations personnel.
“International law must be respected,” the ministry said.
It added that “civilians and peacekeepers must be protected,” calling for urgent de-escalation.
The incident marks the second of its kind within 24 hours, the UNIFIL said, adding that an investigation into the circumstances has been launched.
On Sunday, UNIFIL said one peacekeeper was killed and another injured after a projectile hit a UNIFIL position near the town of Adshit al-Qusayr in southern Lebanon.
