Sweden tracks Russian submarine in Baltic Sea with allies
Military says operation follows reports that vessel broke down in English Channel after NATO chief’s joke about ‘limping’ Russian submarine

LONDON
The Swedish Armed Forces said Wednesday they are tracking a Russian submarine in the Baltic Sea in collaboration with allies as part of “routine operations,” according to Swedish media.
The submarine reportedly entered the Baltic Sea on Tuesday via the Great Belt, Sweden’s public broadcaster SVT said.
Fighter jets and warships met the vessel in the Kattegat Strait and are now following it, the armed forces said in a statement.
The military described the activity as a routine operation taking place in close collaboration with allies.
According to the report, the submarine is believed to be the same vessel reported as broken down earlier this week in the English Channel. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte on Monday joked about a “limping” Russian submarine while commenting on the incident.
