Spain condemns Israeli attacks on densely populated areas in Beirut
Madrid announces $10.3 million aid package to support Lebanese civilians amid rising violence and refugee crisis
ISTANBUL
Spain condemned Israel’s strikes on Lebanon, particularly in densely populated areas of Beirut, warning the attacks have caused numerous civilian casualties and risk further escalating the conflict.
“Spain condemns the intense attacks launched by Israel against Lebanon, and particularly against its capital Beirut, on densely populated areas, causing numerous casualties among the civilian population,” the Spanish Foreign Ministry said in a statement released late Thursday.
The Spanish government said it is “deeply concerned” by the rapid deterioration of the situation in Lebanon. It also condemned Hezbollah’s “indiscriminate attacks” against Israel, warning that such actions could trigger a new spiral of violence and suffering.
Spain reiterated its support for the Lebanese authorities’ efforts to establish a state monopoly over the use of force and urged all parties to avoid steps that could intensify the conflict.
The government strongly rejected what it described as the “illegal and unjustified” order issued by the Israeli army for civilians to evacuate areas south of the Zahrani River, calling the directive “completely disproportionate and contrary to international law.” Madrid called for full respect for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity while stressing the need to prevent further harm to civilians.
Amid the worsening humanitarian situation, Spain announced a new financial aid package of €9 million ($10.3 million) to support the Lebanese population and help address the growing refugee crisis. The government also urged all sides to ensure the safety and security of UN peacekeepers deployed in the country.
On March 2, the Iran-allied group began attacking Israeli military sites in response to repeated Israeli attacks on Lebanon and the killing of Iran’s then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a US-Israeli strike.
Israel retaliated by launching a military campaign on Lebanon, carrying out airstrikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut and areas in the south and east of the country and on March 3 began a limited ground incursion in southern Lebanon.
According to Lebanon’s Health Minister Rakan Nasser El Din, the attacks have resulted in 687 deaths, including 98 children, and 1,774 injuries.
