Russia's war comes from will to restore old sphere of influence: Latvian president
Edgars Rinkevics says Moscow's attack on Ukraine 'was unprovoked’
GENEVA
The president of Latvia said Wednesday that Russia is trying to restore its old sphere of influence with its war against Ukraine.
"Russia's attack was unprovoked. Russia is trying to redraw international borders by force to restore its former sphere of influence,” Edgars Rinkevics said in an address to the annual UN General Assembly in New York.
The world cannot talk about restoring international trust until Russia withdraws from Ukraine as well as stop its "terror and atrocity crimes," he said.
He urged the international community to sustain its provision of all vital aid to Ukraine and emphasized it is crucial to establish a foundation for Ukraine's reconstruction at present, as extensive support will be paramount in enabling its people to reconstruct their nation.
