Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Pope Leo XIV on his election, expressing hope that the constructive dialogue between the Russian Federation and the Vatican would continue to grow based on shared Christian values, according to a statement from the Kremlin.

“Please accept my heartfelt congratulations on your election as pope. I am confident that the constructive dialogue and cooperation established between Russia and the Vatican will continue to develop on the basis of the Christian values that unite us,” Putin said in a message on Thursday addressed to the newly elected pontiff.

The Kremlin made the congratulatory telegram public shortly after the official announcement of Pope Leo XIV’s election.

Pope Leo XIV’s election marks a new chapter for the Holy See, as the Vatican continues to position itself as a diplomatic voice in international conflicts, including the war in Ukraine.
