LONDON
The number of US citizens seeking asylum in Ireland increased more than fourfold last year, according to local media reports on Thursday.
The Irish Times reported that 94 US citizens sought asylum in Ireland in 2025, up from 22 in 2024, citing new figures from the country’s Justice Ministry.
The number of American asylum seekers has risen steadily since 2022, when just 13 people applied, with 18 applicants recorded in 2023, it noted.
Outside of the asylum system, migration from the US to Ireland has also grown.
Some 9,600 US citizens moved to Ireland in the 12 months to April 2025, nearly double the 4,900 who immigrated in the previous 12 months.
Polling by the US research firm Gallup in 2025 indicates that a fifth of Americans said they would like to leave the US.
The figure was higher among women aged 15 to 44, with 40% saying they would move abroad permanently if they had the opportunity.
