Italy announced Tuesday it wants irregular migration to Europe to be included on the EU Council’s Strategic Agenda 2024 - 2029 at a meeting later this month.

Italian Prime Minister Georgia Melon reiterated in a telephone call with President of the European Council, Charles Michel, which focused on the Agenda, that Rome believes the Agenda must address security and defense, confirm the new European approach to managing the migration phenomenon and strengthen the strategic autonomy and competitiveness of European industry as priorities, according to a statement by the Italian Prime Minister’s Office.

“Premier Meloni also stressed the need to always act in accordance with the principles of subsidiarity and proportionality, and to have adequate common resources to meet objectives,” it added.

The statement said Meloni reiterated Italy’s request to include the implementation of EU migration policies as an item on the Agenda meeting to be held June 27 - 28.
