PARIS

A former member of the now-defunct French far-right group suspected of shooting Argentine rugby player Federico Martin Aramburu was arrested in Hungary, prosecutors investigating the murder said Wednesday.

Loik Le Priol, a French former soldier and member of the former far-right students union Groupe Union Defense (GUD) had fled France after fatally shooting Aramburu, 42, on Saturday in Paris.

He was arrested late Tuesday on his way from Hungary to Ukraine, according to BFMTV news.

His alleged girlfriend, who helped in the drive-by shooting, was also indicted Tuesday for complicity in the shooting.

A second suspect, also a member of the far-former far-right group, is on the run and has a European arrest warrant.

The shooting occurred at a bar in the Boulevard Saint-Germain district where Arambu and former teammate Shawn Hegarty were patronizing.

The two had a heated argument with Priol and one of his friends which was initially settled by bar staff.

Later, as the two rugby players left, Priol and his friend followed in a car and shot several rounds of bullets.

Aramaburu, who sustained three bullet shots, was declared dead early Saturday.

He played for Biarritz, Perpignan and Dax from 2004 to 2010.

His family, stunned and saddened by his sudden death, denounced the heinous crime, France24 news reported.

Priol has a criminal record and was placed under judicial supervision since 2015 for violently attacking a former GUD leader. Formed in 1968, GUD has a violent history including the attempted assassination of former President Jacques Chirac. The group has undergone several changes and alliances.

It was dissolved in 2017 only to emerge as a neo-fascist political movement Social Bastion.

The Macron government proscribed the movement in 2019 following several racially-motivated attacks
