The EU's foreign policy chief on Saturday called on the international community to help end Russian attacks on Ukraine by adopting a resolution at the UN General Assembly.

"The UN Security Council vote with important abstention of China, India and UAE and only Russia vetoing, shows international community’s rejection that might makes right and demonstrates Russia’s disregard for its responsibilities and obligations as permanent member," Josep Borrell said on Twitter.

"I call on the entire international community to further join forces and help end Russia’s invasion of Ukraine by adopting the related resolution at UNGA," he added.

"#Russia has to immediately stop its military aggression or face international isolation."

Russia vetoed the resolution that would have deplored its intervention in Ukraine, whereas China, India and the UAE abstained from the vote.

The draft resolution is now expected to be taken up by the 193-member UN General Assembly.

Russia is a Security Council “veto power” along with four other permanent members: the US, UK, China and France.

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the military intervention Thursday, days after recognizing two separatist-held enclaves in eastern Ukraine. He claimed that Moscow had no plan to occupy the neighboring country but wanted to "demilitarize" and "denazify" Ukraine.

Fighting on the third day of the attack is said to have reached the streets of Ukraine’s capital Kyiv.

While Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenkskyy has pledged to defend the country, the West announced sanctions on Moscow, including measures targeting Putin and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

According to UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, more than 150,000 Ukrainian refugees have now crossed into neighboring countries including Poland, Hungary, Moldova and Romania.

"Displacement in Ukraine is also growing but the military situation makes it difficult to estimate numbers and provide aid," he said in a tweet.
