EU Council president urges restraint, respect for international law after US strikes in Iran
'I call on all parties to show restraint and respect for international law and nuclear safety,' Antonio Costa says

BRUSSELS
European Council President Antonio Costa on Sunday called on all parties to show restraint and uphold international law following recent US airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites.
"I call on all parties to show restraint and respect for international law and nuclear safety," he wrote on X.
He said he was "deeply alarmed by the news arriving from the Middle East" and stressed that diplomacy remains the only way to bring peace and security to the region.
"Too many civilians will once again be the victims of a further escalation. The EU will continue engaging with the parties and our partners to find a peaceful solution at the negotiating table," he added.
US President Donald Trump said early Sunday that his forces bombed three Iranian nuclear sites in Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan.
Following the US strikes, Iran called on the UN Security Council to hold an emergency meeting to condemn the US aggression and to hold accountable those who violate international law.
The attacks came as the latest escalation in a US-backed Israeli military assault on Iran since June 13, prompting Tehran to launch retaliatory attacks on Israel.
Israeli authorities said at least 25 people have been killed and hundreds injured since then in Iranian missile attacks.
Meanwhile, in Iran, 430 people have been killed and more than 3,500 wounded in the Israeli assault, according to the Iranian Health Ministry.
