EU commissioner says US signals plan to 'fight' against European unity, urges prudence

BRUSSELS

The US national security strategy signals a potential plan to challenge the European Union, EU Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius said on his personal blog on Wednesday.

"The recently published National Security Strategy of the United States surprises by its clear antagonism towards the European Union, as an organization which unites European Member States," Kubilius wrote.

He criticized the strategy for portraying Europe as facing a “civilizational erasure” and listing EU policies on migration, political liberty, and national identity as potential threats.

The document also underscored US support for European countries and political movements that oppose EU integration.

"According to Americans, – all of that is the list of 'crimes' that the European Union, as a supranational organization, is perpetrating against the national Member States. And since the European Union brings such disasters for Member States, the United States are ready to help Member States to liberate themselves from this oppression by the united European Union," he said.

"It appears from the National Security Strategy, that Americans are planning to fight against the European Union, against our strength through unity, since in their vision the European Union can become a threatening to American interests, – a unifying superstate."

He argued that the US stance is driven more by strategic calculations than ideological or emotional factors, referencing the "strategy of denial" concept outlined by US defense policy expert Elbridge A. Colby.

Drawing historical parallels, Kubilius said rising powers have often faced opposition, citing the US in the 1860s, and warned that careful judgment should guide US actions today.

"Let's hope that also today here will be enough prudence on American soil not to fight against the emerging power of European unity," he said.

The US strategy has drawn criticism from European politicians as well. Germany's Chancellor Friedrich Merz called parts of the document "unacceptable," particularly its claims that Europe suppresses free speech, political opposition, and national sovereignty.

Meanwhile, EU Council chief Antonio Costa said allies should not interfere in each other's internal politics.
