LONDON

The British first member of Parliament to be of Palestinian descent on Wednesday rejected US President Donald Trump’s proposal to take over Gaza, saying peace "cannot come at the cost of our country."

"Trump has clearly not spoken to a single Palestinian about this plan. Gaza is our land. Palestine is our home," Layla Moran, the Liberal Democrat lawmaker for Oxford West and Abingdon, wrote on X.

She noted that peace "cannot come at the cost of our country," urging the UK and the whole international community to "resist him."

"Recognise Palestine now, before it's too late," added Moran who became the first British lawmaker of Palestinian descent after being elected in 2017.

On Tuesday, Trump said during a news conference in Washington with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the US "will take over" Gaza after relocating Palestinians elsewhere.

Trump’s proposal came after the ceasefire agreement took effect in Gaza on Jan. 19, suspending Israel’s genocidal war that has killed more than 47,500 Palestinians and left the enclave in ruins.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants in November last year for Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
