SARAJEVO, Bosnia and Herzegovina

A giant mural of Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher has been unveiled in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The mural of the former seven-time world champion and his iconic Ferrari race car has been painted on a side of a building in Sarajevo.

It was unveiled on Monday to mark the 53rd birthday of the German driver, who remains in recovery since suffering a head injury in a skiing accident in December 2013.

Schumacher was placed in a medically induced coma for several months after the accident. His family was allowed to move him back home in September 2014.

The mural has been made by Bosnian artists Vedran Poricanin, Emir Music, Rijad Hadzic and Benjamin Cengic, with the project supported by German cultural association Goethe-Institut.

Schumacher visited Sarajevo twice as a special UN ambassador for fundraisers to help children injured in years of armed conflict in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“After the end of the Bosnian War, Michael Schumacher visited this district in Sarajevo and gave gifts to the children here,” the artists said in a joint statement.

“We drew this mural so that the people of Sarajevo never forget their true friends.”
