Belgium says no request received to back European reconnaissance mission in Greenland

BRUSSELS

Belgium has not yet received any request from Denmark, NATO, or the EU to support the European reconnaissance mission in Greenland, Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot told parliament on Thursday, according to the Belgian daily La Libre.

The minister emphasized that the deployment of the mission "illustrates the Allies' commitment to contribute to stability on NATO’s northern front."

A meeting held on Wednesday in Washington between US, Danish, and Greenlandic authorities ended with the acknowledgment of a "fundamental disagreement."

"A dialogue has been launched, and that is what matters. Dialogue must remain the only way to address US security concerns," Prevot said.

"Greenland is not for sale. This is the unequivocal position of Belgium, the European Union, and other NATO allies. No hostile action against Greenland is acceptable or will be tolerated," the minister reiterated.

Within the governing coalition, the CD&V party has already expressed support for Belgium's participation in the European reconnaissance mission, which includes France, Germany, the UK, Sweden, and Norway.

Greenland, a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, has attracted US interest due to its strategic location and vast mineral resources, as well as alleged concerns about rising Russian and Chinese activity.

Denmark and Greenland have rejected proposals to sell the territory, reaffirming Danish sovereignty over the island.

Several European countries are boosting their military presence in Greenland through exercises and reconnaissance missions, while Trump has insisted the territory should be "in the hands of the US" to counter Russia and China.
