1 in 3 women in Europe experienced violence: European Parliament rapporteur
More than 50 women are killed in their own homes every week, says Arba Kokalari

BRUSSELS
One in three women in the EU have experienced physical or sexual violence, according to data shared Tuesday by the member and rapporteur at the European Parliament (EP).
The EU's accession process to the Istanbul Convention was discussed with the participation of Helena Dalli, the commissioner for equality at the EP plenary session.
At the beginning of the session, EP Member and Rapporteur Arba Kokalari shared data on violence against women in Europe.
"Every day in Europe, women are being killed by their partners due to violence. Over 50 women are killed in their own homes every week," said Kokalari. "One in three women and girls in the EU has experienced physical or sexual violence, which corresponds to 62 million women. Eighty-five percent of such cases are not reported to the police.”
Dalli urged the EP to approve the convention, saying it would put an end to different practices in member states and pave the way for joint methods to combat violence against women.
If the vote is approved at the session, the convention will be included in the EU acquis and will be binding for member states that have not approved it.
As of December 2022, all EU countries have signed the convention but Hungary, Slovakia, Latvia, Lithuania, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic have not yet ratified it.
