Greenhouse gas emissions in European Union (EU) countries contracted by 5.3% in the second quarter of this year compared to the same period last year, according to the EU's statistical office, Eurostat, on Wednesday.
Emissions fell from 867 million tons to 821 million tons.
The countries with the highest decrease in carbon emissions were Bulgaria with 23.7%, Estonia with 23.1% and the Netherlands with 10.3%.
In the second quarter, among the industries with the highest greenhouse gas emissions were manufacturing at 23.5%, households at 17.9%, electricity and gas supply at 15.5%, agriculture at 14.3%, and transportation and storage at 12.8%.
In this period, data showed a year-over-year decrease in emissions in six out of nine economic sectors, with the biggest decrease in electricity and gas supply at 22%.
