World crude steel production falls 5% in April

ANKARA 

Global crude steel production dropped at the fastest pace in 11 months by 5% year-on-year in April, according to World Steel Association (worldsteel) data released on Friday.

The figure hit 155.7 million tons, down from 164 million tons last year, worldsteel data showed.

Top steel producer China's output dropped 7.2% from a year ago to 85.9 million tons in April.

India produced 12.1 million tons of crude steel, rising 3.6% at an annualized pace, while Japan produced 7.1 million tons, down 2.5%.

The US crude steel output slipped 2.8% to 6.7 million tons and Russia's was down 5.7% to 6.2 million tons in the same period.

Türkiye, the world's seventh-largest crude steel producer, saw a 4.5% hike in crude steel production to 2.7 million tons in April.

In January-April, the steel production for the 71 countries reporting to worldsteel totaled 625.4 million tons, down 0.9% from the same period last year.
